How To Create A Family Budget
If you need to create a family budget but have
failed in the past read our tips beforehand. They will help you
to stay realistic and improve your chances of sticking to your
budget.
How to Create a Family Budget
Family budgets can not only save you a lot of
money long-term but they are essential in today's economy.
Even if you are single, you can create a budget with
relative ease. In fact it is much easier to do than if you
had to feed a bunch of hungry mouths e.g. a family.
Singles are usually in touch with their regular expenses
month after month and have a good idea on their spending
habits. But if you are in charge of a family and all their
needs it is much harder to oversee what comes in and goes out.
Therefore it is very important to design a family budget that
will not only work but also have long-term chances of
survival.
The biggest problem with family budgets is that most people
can't stick to them. You might be excited in the first week and
try really hard to stick to your allowances but soon enough
life will get in the way of your good intentions and your
budget is all but forgotten. It doesn't have to be this way
though. These days, most families have multiple sources of
income as mums are forced to work and supplement the family's
finances.
But the income sources are not the problem when it comes to
excessive spending habits in your family. If we are realistic
then we have to admit that it isn't easy to keep up with the
demands kids place on family budgets these days. They want
everything from label clothing to financial gadgets. Limit them
to the bare minimum and most likely they will be bullied at
school.
It is a tough call for many families on what to
grant kids in terms of personal luxuries in order to stick
to a realistic budget for the whole family. Keeping track
of all our expenses on a day to day basis is challenging.
Therefore is more important than ever to take control of
your family's budget so that you can improve the financial
outlook of your family.
Follow the budgeting tips below to get you started on the
right track. It will certainly be challenging for most people,
especially if you are not the budgeting type, but it can be
done:
- Take stock of all the family's income. if your wife has
a part-time job and her income fluctuates, you should
either calculate averages or to be on the safe side use the
lowest amount.
- You need to record all your family's expenses for a
full month to gauge your indispensable. Ask all members of
your family to collect receipts for every penny they spend.
Also make them record all cash purchases during that
month.
- Once the month has passed add up your total expenses
for that month. Include all your bills; mortgage rates, car
loan rates, fuel, water, electricity, phone bills, mobile
phone bills, food, utilities, transportation, school fees
and everything else you spent.
- Hold a family meeting where you discuss your spending
habits and look at ways where you can save money. Often we
spend money on silly things like lottery tickets,
unnecessary outings at the local bar or candy. Every member
of your family should be ready to tighten their spending
habits to help create a realistic family budget that can be
obeyed. Grant each person their little luxuries to keep
them all happy but make it known that unless you are all
working for a common cause - namely to save money - chances
are that your family might end up homeless one day.
- Cutting down expenses to stick to a family budget isn't
hard if you look at it creatively. However, the hard part
is sticking with it and therefore your budget has to be
realistic enough. Kids need to understand where money comes
from and instead of catering to their every need you could
introduce pocket money and reward them for participating in
household duties such as cleaning, washing the dishes or
moving the lawn.
- Take an estimation of your potential savings, then
re-calculate your financial situation for the next six
month and see where this leads you.
- Ideally you want to be able to save some money. If for
some reasons you still see red numbers after this family
budgeting exercise you will have to go back and tighten the
belt some more.
Why you need to be realistic with your budget
The biggest reason family budgets fail is because they are
created unrealistically. If we take our spending curbing
efforts too far we end up giving up before we even had a
chance. You can't just go from 100 to zero in one month. You
need to allow for certain luxuries for all members of the
family and include these in your family budget.

If your family enjoys regular outings to the movies and
restaurants then instead of cutting them completely out of your
family budget cut down. Instead plan a family night at home
with lots of games, movies and popcorn for the kids. It will
help you save money and keep them all entertained and happy. Be
creative with your ideas. Go for picnics on the beach, in the
park or take your family out to the zoo. Doing this certainly
lightens the budget because you won't be tempted to buy stuff
impulsively opposed to going shopping.
Another helpful idea to save money of the family budget is
by allocating pocket money for each one of you. It's kind of
fun trying to get by with a few dollars each week and see who
ends up spending the least amount. Maybe you could even make
this a competition for the family by which you give the biggest
saver a bonus at the end of the month.
Family budgets are certainly a great way to see you back on
track financially after a couple of month. Design yours smartly
and you should have a higher chance of working your budget for
the family long term.
